I'm using contact form 7, and while it does the job it lacks some advanced features.

My form has become quite elongated over the years and I would like to trim the number of form input elements on the page down a peg or two.

Some form inputs can be hidden from view when they are not relevant to the user.

E.g you could have a question say "Do you own a car?" which is a yes or not question. If no, no further questions about their car is asked, if answered yes more questions follow about the make and model of the car they own.

Even if you don't know what plugin is used for this, can someone give me a term for this type of "technology" so I can search for it in google. I don't really know what to search for.

What you're looking for is a show/hide script. You can do that easily with jQuery. As that's included with WordPress I'd strongly suggest using that. It will take a little while to get your head around it, but that's the way it works.

As ain introduction to it, the jQuery details for hide() are at http://api.jquery.com/hide/
