• Hi there,
    I would love to know how to create a derivative theme off of an existing (and modified) theme – and not just a child theme. I want this to be a standalone theme, to avoid updates to the parent theme.

    I have made a number of modifications to the original before realizing I should have made a child theme. But I modified a number of files, and would like to now unlink it from the parent theme and make it standalone.

    Any help would be much appreciated.
    PS: this ‘new’ theme would only be for personal use, not to be redistributed.

    Cheers

  • make sure that theme is not activated.

    save the theme into its own new folder;
    /wp-content/themes/new_theme_folder

    (or simply change the name of the theme’s folder using cpanel or ftp)

    then edit style.css and change the Theme Name to something unique.

    optionally: make a screenshot of the new theme and replace the (probably) existing screenshot.png in the theme’s folder.

    Ah! Thanks a lot! I will give that a shot.

    And then how would I activate it? Would it automatically appear in Dashboard, if it’s already in the themes directory?

    Thanks!
