Before my site speed was 2 sec but Last nite I configured and activated the plugin and when i checked my site speed it showed 5 sec (even slower). It should be noted that I am using a shared hosting

I think i must have made incorrect configuration.

please anyone suggest me how to configure w3 total cache in plugins settings.

Also, a complete guide to use this plugin would be appreciated.

There is no complete guide for the plugin, that would be a book on web site performance. Shared hosting promises no consistent performance for your web site because resources are shared with other sites. It's best to use the W3TC defaults for shared hosting, there really is nothing faster. That means try only using disk enhanced method of page caching with all other caching types disabled and then use your page speed or YSlow tests after you first load the home page in a browser that is not logged in to WordPress so that the cache file will be created.
