How to close WP 2.2.1 wp-pass vulnerability?

How best should one fix the WP 2.2.1 wp-pass vulnerability? Is there a temporary fix to be made in the codebase while waiting for 2.2.2, or should one take the tactic of a mod_security rule such as the one that “daniel” provided in the comments?
