How to change theme via FTP (6 posts)

I was playing around with my blog, http://www.loveforthailand.org/blog, and I really screwed it up, by editing my functions.php file I think.

Now google chrome is giving me this error "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request."

    So I have 2 problems:
1: I can't even get to my site.
2: I can't change it back via FTP due to file permissions in my wp-content/themes/MyTheme So I can't change the files in the theme.

And now I have 2 questions:
1: Is it possible to change a file in my 'root' (/blog) directory to change my theme back to twenty-ten so I can change the file via the site. I have tried and failed to find out where you do that.
2: How can I set permissions to access wp-content/themes/MyTheme via FTP?

    Thanks in advance!

    simply ftp to site
    or
use your host's file manager and rename the /mytheme folder to whatever
this will deactivate it and bring up the default theme and let you log in and fix your theme

hmmmmm, changing the name didn't fully work....
When I go to the site it shows a blank page, totally white.
And if I view the page source there it is also an empty page.
What is the name of the default theme, maybe it got changed, I still have both 2010 and 2011 still installed.
    Any help on this? Thanks

Also the 404.php seems to be working.

twenty eleven is the default theme
renaming the theme should work - I've never seen it fail

hmmmm where did the edit button go.....

Ok so I fixed the problem by copying the /blog folder onto my computer changing the permissions and then uploading it so now I can write in /mytheme folder. So I edited to file that was messing things up.
    Problem solved.

And I still don't know why renaming it doesn't work. Even if I rename the 2010 theme to the name of the broken theme is still doesn't work...
Which from Mr. Samuel's post seems like a weird thing, and it is also weird how the site seemed to be tied to that one theme.
