Opening my home page, it lists all 17 categories. Six of those categories I put under a parent category. How do I make it so only the parent category shows, and then when you click on the parent category it opens the children. For example, I am a teacher. I would like my users to click on 5th grade and then see all the categories of of science topics related just to 5th grade.

You could try using a plugin for that..
