Ok, so I am new to this web design thing and have been told that wordpress is the way to go. I am interning for DCI Architects this summer. Their existing site, dciarchitects.com, needs to be redone but I have been told that the homepage (index.html) will be overwritten by index.php once wordpress is installed. They are worried about not having a website while the new one is in construction. Is this at all avoidable?
Install WP in a sub-folder, then when you're ready to launch the new site, see Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory.

Great, I heard this from another source but they were not too sure it would work. Thank you for the confirmation. Only problem now is, and I apologize for my ignorance, I just don't understand what folder this sub-folder should work in conjunction with. I know there should be a folder on our server that holds all the files used for the site. Is this what you are talking about? How do I locate this!?
In otherwords create a sub-folder/directory.
If your main website is located in:
/home/username/public_html/
create
/home/username/public_html/wp/
