How to Avoid Google "Duplicate Content Penalty" with Multisite? (10 posts)

    Hi there,
I'm planning to use WordPress Multisite to deploy several websites. Nothing spammy like 1000s or things like that, just my 10 little websites that sell some ebooks about health etc.

The problem is, when using WordPress Multisite and the Domain Mapping plugin there are actually 2 versions on the site available on the internet:

    http://www.domainwherewpmultisiteisinstalled.com/nameoftheblog/
    AND http://www.nameoftheblog.com

So... who do you tell Google that it is the SAME site, that is not duplicate content in an easy way? Is there a plugin for that? Am I worring for something that is not important?

    How would you solve this?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Look at the domain mapping settings. Read what it says. :) There's a section about doing the 301 redirect - which tells google the primary one.

Also duplicate content refers to content on the same URL, not different ones. your mapped domain & subdomain are different.

  3. Also duplicate content refers to content on the same URL, not different ones. your mapped domain & subdomain are different.

Which is why splogs 'work' :/

    Yep.

I've actually gotten the duplicate content warning one of my sites. The same post in multiple categories did it.

    Andrea,

I have a client who wants to build a syndicated publishing system, where there will be some global content available on all child sites (in addition to content generated from the child itself). I'm using WordPress multisite to do this, with the parent site providing the global content and the child site editors having access only to create child site content.

The result is that each child site has a duplicate list of global articles, each of which point to the same global URL. In other words, duplicate content is appearing on the index pages where they display a list of global articles with their excerpts. Ultimately the URLs that the article excerpts point to is the same for each child site (i.e., no need to label it canonical?) — although the Title of the page will vary depending on which child edition they are viewing.

I'm concerned that Google may penalize my client for this, even though he has no intent of deceiving the search engines. What's your hit?

That's not a problem. You have multiple LINKS to ONE article, right? Not multiple links and multiple articles.

    Thanks, Ipstenu.

So you don't feel that the duplication that's going to occur with the excerpts is going to set off any flags...?

Here's an example so you can see what I'm talking about:

The article list with excerpts under GLOBAL in the right column are going to be repeated under many child sites. But the articles in the left column will vary depending on the child site location.

What Ipstenu said. they are all linking to the same permalink.

That is not what google means is duplicate content.

FWIW, I have gotten duplicate content warnings on one of my sites, and it's becasue I cross-posted the same post in multiple categories and didn't specify which one was canonical.

That's it. One site, multiple cats for one post.
