How to allow users(contributors) to post

Hi

I’m very new to wordpress andI set up a custom theme yesterday: Backpacker Tales.

I want to add a register/log in box to the sidebar or header, how do I do this and when people register I have the default profile set to contributor, will this allow them to post their stories to the website?
