• Hi
I am new to WordPress. I am reading as much as I can to learn, but cannot find one I answer I am looking for.
My site is all about campaigns. I want that anyone who registers can write their own articles (call them what you will, posts, stories, articles, campaigns) and I want to general public to be able to post a comment. But, I don’t want that each member can change/edit/change/delete other member’s stories.
I through the correct (default) user type for members would be “Contributor”, but when they log in they can do too much.
Is this already catered for ?
I am still trying to understand the difference between contributors and authors.
    Cheers, Phil

    Hi,

The abilities to comment and to post are separate so you don’t need to worry there. The differences between the user roles for posting is subtle but the following summary can help hopefully:

    * Subscriber: can only read posts and comments
    * Contributor: same as Subscriber but can write their own posts; these posts need to be approved by an Editor or Administrator before they will be published
    * Author: same as Contributor but their own written posts do not require approval
    * Editor: same as Author but can manage (approve/reject/edit) posts of other users; can create pages but cannot manage users
    * Administrator: same as Editor but can manage users

So you can see the main difference between Contributor and Author is whether posts require approval. If you want to check every post before it’s published (advisable), use Contributor.

You don’t really mention what is considered “too much” that Contributors can do?

    All the best.
    Vaughan

This plugin; Role Manager, may help you to understand and fine-tune those capabilities.

That role manager plugin works like a charm
