how to add stuff to the sidebar (not widgets)

In a nutshell I’m trying to figure out how I can add things to my side bar. For example the blogcatalog button & widget (code posted at bottom) I’ve been screwing around editing my sidebar. I managed to put it in the sidebar once..but when the calender is up it doesnt show.

I’m going to want to add a lot of different buttons eventually..any good tutorials or is their an easy way?
