   I am trying to add a sidebar that has multiple thumbnails like this site -

   (the sponsors sidebar that has multiple thumbnails that when clicked on go to the new site)

   You can use a Text widget and paste the HTML code into it. If necessary, use a separate widget for each sponsor.
