    Hi there,
Great plugin! However, I must be missing something simple, I’m not a web guy. How do I add a shortcode to show the excerpts of my testimonials on a section in my home page? I want it to cycle through the excerpts and then give a link to “read more” as in what I believe I read was a feature of this program.

I’ve tried to find the answer myself and tried numerous ways but I just don’t see it. Even if I use the widget with a program called “Wdigets on Pages” I don’t get the option to use excerpts. I’m sure there MUST be a reason there is an option to input the “excerpts.” I just don’t know how to use it. Thanks!

    Thanks.

The plugin does not support the WordPress excerpt feature yet, if that’s what you’re referring to.

The widget has a character limit setting (default: 200) and “Read more” link setting (default: unchecked). The [cycle] shortcode has the same options as the widget, except for the character limit and “Read more” link. I can add that to the next minor update if you want; that should be in a few days. That’s probably the best solution.

I was successfully able to use Widgets on Pages to do what you described. On the TwentyFourteen theme, I had to change the link color. The sidebar, where the widget normally goes, is white on black, and the page is black on white. Adding a widget to a page made the link white on white.

What result do you get when you try Widgets on Pages?

If your site is live and you can post a link, I’ll gladly take a look under the hood.

I had minor success using that plugin Widgets on Pages. It works, I just would prefer to have the excerpts.

You may take a look if you want. The site is in no way “live” though it is accessible via the web. 😉

If you look at my “live” site http://www.whyreboot.com you can see a working testimonial with the excerpt functioning correctly. Unfortunately something is broken with the later version and the author has not been able to come up with a solution.

Here’s the site you were asking about, I tested with a “third” of a page:

I’m hating the world right now because I wish I had a web guy to do all of this instead of me. haha

Thanks for the examples. I understand now.

You want “Read more” to mean “more of this testimonial” instead of “read more testimonials” like it is now.

You want “excerpt” to mean a sentence you’ve chosen from the testimonial instead of the first 200 or so characters like it is now.

I can do this but it won’t be soon.

What are you using for the testimonials on the home page? Are you looking at Strong to replace that? Maybe I can fix that for you instead.

Good news and good timing. I have just received similar requests for the excerpt-plus-read-more feature so I’m going to work on that next.

Excellent, thank you sir! Is it possible to make it so we can just enter some shortcode instead of using a widget? I ask because I’d rather limit the amount of plugins on my site. In past experience I’ve noticed that some authors don’t update their software and things tend to break upon updating then. In other words, I’d rather not use “Widgets on Pages” unless I really have to.

Though I have to say, “Widgets on Pages” seems to work really well and does exactly what it says.

    Thanks again!

Oh, and I forgot to answer your other question. On my “live” site I’m using TB-Testimonials which worked great for a while there but it’s not working on the new site. There’s some known issue that hasn’t been addressed yet with their widget.

    Cool.

Yes, it will be a shortcode. I agree with your approach to plugins. The fewer dependencies the better.

I saw your support thread on TBT and I’m going to have a look to see if I can fix it; as much for my own knowledge as anything. No more than a few hours then back to Strong 🙂

+1 for lokibjensen’s idea. I also need character limit and “read more” on the cycle shortcode. I am not using the widget, unfortunately. If someone has a long testimonial, it messes up my container scaling.

    Great plugin!

This is now working in version 1.8. The options are on the Testimonial Settings > Cycle Shortcode tab. It’s straightforward and I plan to publish a tutorial next but let me know if you need help.

Thank you sir! I’ll give it a shot!

Awesome! Almost perfect. For some reason it doesn’t let you choose “1 column” however, even though the radio is stuck on “2 columns” it is still one which is what I wanted anyway.

Only formatting thing would be if there is some way to separate the name of the person by a space and maybe put their info, name and company, in italics.

Either way, I love it! Thank you so much!

I don’t know what you mean by “1 column”. Which setting is that?

    Thread Starter lokibjensen

    (@lokibjensen)

Under “Screen Layout” there is an option for “Number of Columns” with 2 radio buttons as choices.

    Not in my plugin.

I’ll shoot you a screenshot via email if I can have your address. It even has your profile picture and name in the top right of the window. 😉
