I am using Paid Membership Pro and want to add welcome email templates. The instructions tell me to add the template file to my active theme directory but I can't find how to do that (complete novice!)

In your WP dashboard, go to Appearance --> Themes to see which theme you are using. Then locate the folder for it.
E.g. if you are using the Twenty Eleven theme, your active theme will be in the wp-content/themes/twenty-eleven/ folder of your website.
Note if you are using a "child theme" (e.g. from Studio Press or Woo Themes) then PMPro will look for files int he parent directory (this is kind of a bug in the plugin).
