This sounds really dumb ...but can anyone let me know how to
add categories for my blog... I still have only "uncategorized"
Is this function under "manage" link? If it is, then that's another problem. For some reason I get a "page not found" when I click on the "manage" link.
ANy help will be appreciated

Manage > Categories, scroll down.

Are you missing the /wp-admin/edit.php file?

This does seem one and the same issue as:

Double-check your wp-admin/ directory for the file dgstinner mentions.

yes, the file edit.php does exist in the wp-admin folder.
