How to add categories to a menu with child categories automatically (8 posts)

When I want to make a new custom menu and look at the category box all I see is an alphabetical list of categories with no hierarchical layout like what I see on the category admin page... this makes it VERY hard to know which category is which as i have many child categories of the same name but different parents. Therefore I have no idea what category to drag and drop in what position in my custom menu.

    Does this make sense?

If it does, is there any way I can either view the categories on the custom menu admin page in hierarchical order OR when i add a parent category the child categories automatically are added in hierarchical order.

    Thanks heaps,
    Pete

Sorry - that's not currently possible as far as I am aware - primarily because any sort of hierarchy doesn't make sense in a custom menu with its own hierarchy.

It certainly does make sense if you want to manipulate that hierarchy in a user-friendly way rather than having to dive into the raw code and template tags. Little things like this are stopping WP becoming a great CMS :)

Why would you need to delve into template files?

WP are recommending theme developers use menu locations in their themes to utilise the custom menu UI but they don't allow something so simple as hierarchies :(

I need to use the Template Tags/wp list categories in my theme to be able list all my many categories with auto hierarchy

Why not have a checkbox that 'gives us the option' to add the categories as they have been formed and let us customise it from there?
