Usually, people copy it into the footer.php right before the closing </body> tag. It should work.
On your computer open the file in a plain text ediotr (like Notepad, NOT Word) and paste the code. Save. Upload via FTP. Done.
My GA code is right where you say to put it and it doesn’t work.
Analytics has this in their help center

I am not finding these calls but am not sure where I should be looking. I am using the Thoughts-20 theme
I doubt the theme would be using these function calls.
Have you checked that the code is appearing on your site by looking at the bottom of the document when viewing the source?
Do you have caching of any kind enabled?
