How much do you charge to list a theme under featured section? (12 posts)

On what basis are the featured themes selected? Don't tell me they are selected for their uniqueness. Tell me how much should I spend to get a theme listed in that section?

Almost 10 themes listed under featured section have been there for the last six months (That's since have been closely observing the WordPress theme directory, so it may be longer than that). Themes like Atahualpa, constructor,Mystique are out of the box and deserve to be there but rest of the themes listed under featured section aren't so special to be listed there for years. I think pixel, light world, piano black,Retromania have been there for almost 2 years.

How different is Motion theme from Pixel? Whats the point in listing two almost identical themes from the same author in featured section?

Whats so amazing about Piano Black?

Monochrome and Piano black are from the same author, is he a friend of your?

    Same with pixel and motion.

If Piano black is such a great theme, how many people are using it?

Listing 2 themes from the same author listed under featured section, isn't fair. I think you should have proper guidelines for listing a theme under featured section. Every developer should be given equal exposure. We spend lot of time in developing these themes. It's our choice and we enjoy developing these themes but, it's demoralizing when our theme which is better than other themes doesn't get the enough exposure just because the person reviewing the theme doesn't like it, or doesn't have the time to dig into see what the theme has to offer.

Most of the themes listed under popular themes section are popular only because they are listed under featured themes, please do something about.

I hope you will do something about the issue.

    Kind Regards
    Satish Gandham

You also asked this question on the theme-reviewers list where it is still being discussed. There does seem to be some confusion over who now handles Featured Themes and how. The current theme review team certainly has no access whatsoever to any means of marking a theme to be Featured. But then the current theme review process is still fairly new, so it may be that some of theme directory features haven't yet been made available to the review team. Maybe it will be part of the wordpress.org general makeover?

Under the circumstances, and given the ongoing site makeover and new theme review system, I think it's a little OTT to start implying that money is changing hands when:

    a) you have no direct evidence of this
    and
    b) the theme-review team did answer your question promptly.

There is no money changing hands or other bartering for placement under Featured Themes. The selection process could stand an upgrade as @esmi said, but it's not paid placement.

Some one on the mailing list suggested to discuss this issue on the forum, so I posted it here.

First, I'm not pointing at the new review committee. The question was to the person with rights to edit the featured listing.

The featured listing is changed very rarely, updated list will have the same old themes with a different order. Very rarely one or two new themes make it to the list.

Can anyone with rights to select featured themes give reasons to

why pixel and motion have been listed there?
    Why piano black?
    Why retromania?
Why are they there for more than 2 years?
why 2 themes from same author?

I cannot think of any valid reasons for the listing of the above said themes for such long duration except for money/friendship.

I have no evidence of money changing hands, hadn't i implied that this question wouldn't have got the attention it got.

My intention is to get attention of the people on the top, show them the problem and motivate them to make featured listing transparent like the popular themes listing.

To people at the top of the ladder…

Though WordPress is your software, it's the community around it that makes WordPress what it is today. I think you are answerable to the community.

    Am I wrong?

PS: I sent the above question to themes@wordpress.org on Dec 10, 2009. It wasn't replied.

why pixel and motion have been listed there?
    Why piano black?
    Why retromania?

Because somebody thought they were good themes.

Why are they there for more than 2 years?

Because nobody has changed that list for a while.

why 2 themes from same author?

Because he had two good themes.

    Am I wrong?

You're wrong to make accusations without any evidence, yes.

Don't assume malice. The simple fact is that nobody is actively maintaining that list in any serious way.

With all due respect, the current theme review team (and mailing list?) has only been up & running since May/June 2010.

The Theme Review Team would be happy to help manage the Featured Themes list ... although I believe the mailing list discussion that was/is ongoing would have been fine to continue this discussion.

"Because somebody thought they were good themes."

For a software whose backbone is the community around it, your answer is funny.

Because he had two good themes.

Yeah two good almost identical themes, pixel and motion by sam07
And two very very good themes piano black and monochrome.

I know I'm wrong about the money thing, I explained why i said that in my previous post.

I have no evidence of money changing hands, hadn't i implied that this question wouldn't have got the attention it got.

I was asking if I'm wrong in questioning the how featured themes are listed.

I'm not here to blame anybody. I just wish there is some transparency in the selection procedure, a hope that If we develop good themes, they get the exposure they deserve.

I know that the review committee has changed, my questions are for those who control the featured listing.

I think the issue may be that no one has been controlling it actively for a while and it's been gathering dust. Since there is a new theme review system & team in place and the site is having a makeover, perhaps now would be a good time to put forward suggestions for an improved featured listing system - such as:

    - how should a featured theme be chosen?
    - should a time limit be imposed on any given theme remaining on the list?
    - should a limit of 1 theme per developer be imposed?
    - should the list be smaller but change more frequently?
    - who should look after the featured listing?

We can split the featured section into categories. like

    *Lite weight themes.
    *Magazine themes.
    *Image heavy themes.
    *Customizable themes.
    *Top rated themes.

and display the best in each category.

Pick more themes as featured themes, and display few of them randomly on the homepage with a link to the full list.

    - should a limit of 1 theme per developer be imposed?

I don't think that's a good idea, if a someone developed two extremely good themes, both of them should be listed.

    - who should look after the featured listing?

Definitely not a single person, may be voting by users or a panel?
