If you can't drag them into place, then look at the upper right in the widgets screen and click Screen Options, then at the left, enable accessibility mode.

The video by Kirk here still applies... a little dated, but still relevant..

Watch the top most video, it should answer your question...

You download the relevant plugin and install it like any other plugin.

Widgets aren't separate things you download, they are bits that can go on the sidebar which can be added by either plugins or themes.

Late to the party here. I've found a widget on WP.org (actually a few this happened to), and clicked either "download" or "install".

The "install" ones I believed would install the widget into my WP_admin, but did not. They did not appear in the "available widgets" area on Dashboard after "installing" and refreshing. This morning's efforts of finding and installing proved wasteful. :(

The widget that prompted to "download", downloaded .zip files to my local PC hard drive; I want them to be on my WP_admin site on WP.org, so how does that happen?

The thing I loved about WP.com is that it's all click, click, click. WP.org is making me *think*, for Pete's sake! :) ;) The video posted above is helpful, but it addresses widgets that are already installed (which is where this post stems from), and stops short of explaining "the rest of the install." I think we need to know how to get the widgets actually installed and showing up in the available widgets area.

    Help?

Okay, guess what? Here is a really good explanation I finally found:
    http://wpfirstaid.com/2009/12/plugin-installation/

The plugin gets added to the plugin area, not the widget area; but if it's a widget, after you activate the plugin you can enable it as a widget, and it will appear in the widget area.

    'Kay.
