    Hello,

When WordPress 3.0 was released four years ago, it was a big deal, because it merged the WordPress and WordPress MU branches, bringing multisite networks to the standard WordPress install.

Having looked at the beta 1 details, I’m wondering: compared to WordPress 3.0, does 4.0 have any similarly significant updates or implications for the average user? That is, is it a bigger upgrade from 3.9 to 4.0 than it was from 3.8 to 3.9?

Well, from what I see it’s going to be a wee bit bigger than 3.8 to 3.9, but only in the sense that I think the developers are all interested in 3.9 to 4.0 being a bigger change than 3.8 to 3.9, if that makes any sense. 🙂

There are certainly a few more UI/UX refreshes planned for 3.9 to 4.0 than 3.8 to 3.9 had planned, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll all make it to 4.0. Some might be held for 4.1.

To be honest, WordPress 3.0 was a huge change with the multisite integration, and I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like that for a very long time.

But, to answer your very first question, WordPress 4.0 is very important. All WordPress releases are very important, regardless of how many features they add, because they ensure that you have the latest security fixes. 🙂

    Thank you, James!

I agree that every WordPress update is the culmination of the work and dedication of countless volunteers, and the new features and security fixes these updates bring to the platform are invaluable.

    Cheers,
