   Do I need to upgrade if I want to customize a site to look like http://www.gizmodo.com?

   Is upgrading wordpress makes it easy to do thattype of lay out? Or would I need to go outside wordpress?

   What do you mean by upgrade? Are you on xxxxx.wordpress.com or are you hosting your WordPress in own or paid webhost?

   Is upgrading wordpress makes it easy to do thattype of lay out?

   If you are hosting your WP, that is, you are not on WordPress.com, then the sky's the limit to how you design your site as long as you know your HTML and CSS.

   Right now I am just ****.wordpress.com. No hosting yet.

   Yes, you would have to upgrade to WordPress.com premium account for Custom CSS

   You can buy some hosting and then point your ***.wordpress.com to your hosting nameservers then everything will be in your hand just install the latest WP 2.8 and configure your themes etc. get some designer or try yourself if you know how to code..
