How does one STOP Spam User Registrations? (16 posts)

My web site has been receiving hundreds of invalid user registrations per day for the past number of months. I have to delete 1000's of these every week.

When a user registration is correctly done, I would receive an email but these user registrations are occurring without going through that process, i.e., no emails. Any idea on how I can stop this? General Settings:Membership:Anyone Can Register is unchecked. I have tried using different captchas at login (didn't help). I have changed the administrator accounts (didn't help). I am not finding answers in the WP forums or help pages or haven't found the right one yet.

    Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It can happen because of malware bots and others.
    Please post your site URL.

    It looks like malware: http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/morgan-nj.org
    Reason:
Site found to be used on spam campaigns (either forum, comment or SEO spam)

Thank you Krishna for that information. Are there other options which don't require purchasing a license?

Go to Dashboard > Settings > General and un-check "Anyone can register", then also look around there a bit and turn comments off until you are prepared to deal with whatever might come.

PS: Now might be a good time to set your Permalinks, but do *not* changed either of the links for your site at Dashboard > Settings > General.

Install the plug-in and forget about spam. http://wordpress.org/plugins/cleantalk-spam-protect/

Spam is filtered out automatically, no need to manually delete comments, no captcha, the visitors comfortably comment

I am working on releasing a plugin to address exactly this issue. The plugin would check with the email server whether the email address really exists. If the email address is fake then the user wouldn't be able to register.

Feel free to suggest any additional features that you would like to see in this plugin. I intend to release it by end of this week.

@ri55 - I'd be interested in your plugin. I am working on a site, have an active "coming soon" plugin, have done zero SEO, and keep getting random hotmail signups. It's so hard to imagine how people are finding my site at this point. I'm pretty suspicious. I'd love to be able to verify these emails.

    How's progress?

    Hello:

I have been receiving several emails of spam registrations to my blog.

I tried to locate the membership function under the general setting tab and could not locate it.

I'm wondering if someone would be able to assist?

    Really appreciate it!

    Thank you!

    @zemina

It's in the Settings menu on your dashboard sidebar, under the submenu General, once you are in that page, it is under a header called "Membership".

Tried to include a screenshot of it, but not really allowed to do that apparently. :(

I don't have that option. I only have this:

ON the side bar, when I select Settings, and then General, I only have the following options:

    Site Title
    Tagline
    Timezone
    Date Format
    Time Format
    Week Starts On
    Language
