   how do you update .htaccess file ---wp 2.8.4 for a total NEWBIE!

   You either update it manually using a plain text editor and then upload it, via FTP, to the root folder of your WP install. Or you can change the permissions of the .htaccess file to make it writable and let WP update it as necessary.

   Thanks esmi, but i am totally new to all of this. If you could break this down for me in baby steps i would truly, truly appreciate this.
