I'm about to transfer an entire site to a new server. This includes a wordpress blog. Is there ANY way to test the site and the blog before I change the DNS?

I've searched through these forums and google for a long time and I can't find an answer that works...

Also - what is the best way to backup WordPress including all of the plugin and widget data? Last time I moved servers it erased a lot of settings and data that I have input.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you can do it.

Talk to your web hosting company.

You may have to access your site like this:

    http://www.yourwebsite.com/mysterious-stuff-hosting-company-tells-you-to-type

    rather than:

    http://www.yourwebsite.com/the-way-you-normally-would-want-it

it actually might be on the front, like:

    http://mysterious-webhosting-content-stuff.yourwebsitedomain.com

I'm 90% sure this can be done. But the people to speak to are the webhosting people.

As for moving wordpress to new host I have article and video on my website on how to move wordpress to new host

As for connecting your server before you change DNS you can use http://yourserveripaddress/~username/cpanel if you using cpanel

I'm not sure if iluvpinkerton asked this question already, but I have a similar question. How can I edit a wordpress theme and view it offline before uploading to host. I'm new to webmastering and wordpress and there's a lot of info out there, but I haven't been able to find exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks

govpatel, that url format is still not working for me. It looks like my control panel says "webhostmanageger" at the top. Any ideas?
