[resolved] How do you promote your Blog? (54 posts)

    Hello,

I am familiar with Web sites and message boards, but this is my first Blog. With Web sites, you submit them to the search engines. I have my Blog separate from my Web site on purpose.

My question is how do I promote my new Blog? Since it's not a part of my Web site, is there a similar method for submitting Blogs to search engines?

    Thanks for any help.

There is in fact a similar method for submitting blogs to search engines, the exact same method. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

    Hi mylagoon.

    > There is in fact a similar method for submitting blogs to search engines, the exact same method. <

    Ahahahahaha. :)

You know, after I left my message yesterday, I thought of that. Just submit the blog to the search engines, but with the blog's URL. Talk about missing the obvious.

Thanks for the reply confirming this.

I have two more questions. Maybe mylagoon knows.

    1) On a Web site you fill in the title and key words for each page before you submit it to the search engines. Before I submit my Blog to the Search Engines, I'd like to know how to add a title and key words to it, to get better search engine placement. Is that feature built into WordPress or do I have to hand code it into the Blog?

    2) Besides search engine submission are there "blog sites" where people can submit their blogs for others to see? I'm sure there are, but I haven't checked yet and I figured those in the know would be able to give me a list of the best sites.

    Thanks for any help.

    1. I can't see your blog - it's not linked to your name. What exactly do you mean by "title"?

You can add keyword manually, or you can search for a plugin that would do that - though SEs don't rely as much on keywords as they used to (all the SEO people say so). Content! That's the "king".

    2. If you didn't modify anything your WP blog should "ping" at least one site that is supposed to ping a lot of other sites about every new post in your blog.
http://pingomatic.com/ pings all the sites listed there.

Yeah, I've always found that pinging pingomatic and submitting my site to google did the trick. I get pretty god ratings for my posts on a wide range of search enginges now.

It's a bit like a snowball effect thingo. Once it gets started it kinda takes on a life of it's own.

Also, on a side note, how is your profile linked website coded DomFontana? It almost crashed FF and my whole computer freezed up!

    Moshu,

    > I can't see your blog - it's not linked to your name. <

Well, that's what I'm getting at. I just started the blog and have published a number of messages and wanted to know what the next step was to get the blog "out there," as it were.

    > What exactly do you mean by "title"? <

On a web site you give a title to each page and then add key words to each page. I guess with a blog you just need the key words.

    > You can add keyword manually, or you can search for a plugin that would do that <

Okay, how dow I add the key words manually?

    > If you didn't modify anything your WP blog should "ping" at least one site <

No, I didn't modify anything. Also, thanks for the pingomatic site.

    mylagoon:

    > Also, on a side note, how is your profile linked website coded DomFontana? It almost crashed FF and my whole computer freezed up! <

I'm not certain I understand your question. Are you asking how my web site is coded? If so, it was done with Yahoo sitebuilder.

It definitely should not have caused a crash with FireFox or any other broswer. It was tested extensively with Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, and Netscape and this is the first report of a crash I have received.

If you can give me more information, I would like to fix this.

    Thanks for all the help.

    mylagoon:

I checked out your blog. Very nicely done. I will be updating mine, but I wanted to add content to it first.

    Moshu:

Yours was very nice, too, but when I mouseover the links on the right, everything turns white and the links disappear.

Dom, there are no "get traffic quick" fixes. Follow the info already mentioned, keep adding content, and wait for Google and the other search engines to find your site and spider it. Look into the Google Sitemap plugin, and you may want to look into one of the tagging plugins like Jerome's keywords or Ultimate Tag Warrior as well. Reading other blogs and leaving pertinent comments is another way of building "juice" in a healthy fashion. There are hundreds of sites and articles out there on the subject, regarding some of your questions, you may want to research meta tags as well. I know there are a couple of WP plugins that will take the tags from Jerome's keywords or UTW and automagically add them to your header. But there are equally those that will argue that is not as useful as it once was.
But as I stated, there's no quick fix, especially for long term success. Keep reading, writing, and plugging along is the only real way of assuring yourself traffic.

    DomFontana,
I think your questions have all almost been answered. I just want to add the there is no difference with blog and website when it comes to search engines. Just see you blog as a website. Though blogs are more interactive and so would stay on the search engines ones it gets there. Make sure you share your idea with others and let them put life into your blog.

I had a website like you before blogging. You can visit the chatroom at http://www.livinusnosike.com. You will also see my website, my blog and forum network and then ask specific questions if you still have more.

    cheers.

    Hi, miklb.

    > Dom, there are no "get traffic quick" fixes. <

Haha. I like the way you put that. I guess that's what I was looking for. Many people have their Blogs as part of their Web sites, but I specifically did not want it as part of my site.

I did add the Meta Tags myself and then submitted the Blog to Yahoo and Google, just as if it were a Web site. I also found a site (the name escapes me) that allowed me to add my Blog to its list of Blogs.

Thanks for all the other suggestions. I will look into them.

Also, I left my earlier messages before reading the Forum Posting Rules in their entirety, so I didn't know signatures weren't allowed. Sorry about that.

    Hi, Nosike.

Very nice site indeed. Very professional.

I hope I'm allowed to do this, but can you take a look at my blog and tell me if you think I'm on the right track here. I did visit other people's Blogs, but many of them were teenage girls talking about their daily activities.

My Blog is not about me and it's not an online diary. Basically I'm ranting and raving on a variety of topics. I haven't customized the template that much yet because I want to add content first.

If you'd like to take a look and give me your comments, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

just letting you know that sidebar is at the bottom. The header and footer are not aligned properly. Let me know if you want a screenshot.

Do check out my blog and let me know how it is :)

    DomFontana,
I think your blog is great!! It's the first time in months that I've just "sit and read". Thanks!!

Now, give me clue....Why do you want to promote it?

Here is something I came across today that is a straight answer to your question.

    srikat:

Yes, the header/footer problem just happened yesterday. Everything was aligned before that. When the blog went to two pages, then the formatting came out of sync and the links appeared at the bottom. I have to find out how to correct it.

Your site is very nice indeed. I liked it. The only thing is that the light green text on the white background is a little tough to read. Other than that, it's great.

Also, thanks for the link about blog promotion. I'm checking it out and will use the tips I find there.

    Thanks again.

    GadeTerbob,

Oh, I'm glad you liked it. You're the first person to read it. Thanks.

    > Now, give me clue....Why do you want to promote it? <

I feel like I'm writing in a vacuum. Nobody knows about the Blog and nobody is visiting it and writing comments. So I feel as if I have no "audience," as it were.

I heard there was something called a link exchange program. It's where you put links to other people's blogs on your blog and they reciprocate. Do you know anything about this?

It may be in the info that srikat sent me, but I haven't gone through all of it yet, so I'm not sure.

    Thanks for any help.

Please don't think I'm being hyper critical, but my soul was burning to comment on your hamburger article. How right you are!! But...

There is no registration link...that I could find. And you have your blog set to require commenters to be logged in. See the problem?

Perhaps using your blog url in your profile on this (and other) forums will help publicize it.

    I like your blog - it's nice.
    However:
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.fontanafirm.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&ss=1

Some of these will screw up your main container/sidebar.

    Gade,

    > There is no registration link...that I could find. And you have your blog set to require commenters to be logged in. See the problem? <

That's pretty stupid of me, huh? You're absolutely right. I've been so involved with adding content that I have neglected some basic things. I'm always logged in as the Admin, so I figured that's why there was no registration option for me. But apparently, no one can register and you can't leave comments unless you register.

Well, thanks for telling me. I'll set it up now that you don't have to register to post comments.

What's the norm, if there is one? On most blogs, do you usually have to register to post comments? Also, I figured if you set registration required in the WP options that the registration info would automatically appear. Since it doesn't, who would one implement blog registration? Is it an add-in program?

I'll add the blog url to my profile. It seems you just promote a blog the way you promote a web site. For some reason, I didn't think of it that way at first.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

    samboll,

Thank you; thank you; thank you. I bookmarked that site, so I can check the code myself next time.

I'll go through everything, but I'm pretty sure now that using the <center> tags in all my post titles is what is causing the problem.

    Thanks again.

Unless you have a special reason to do it I don't think you need to require registering just for comments. (To be honest, I never comment on blogs that require registration...)

To display a link to registration, use http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_register

FYI: about the links here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/42196?replies=18#post-379167

    srikat,

    Thanks for the link.

I still have the problem with the template. I took out the center tags in all my titles, but the template is still out of alignment.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Man... first of all, that's an awfully long page to enter a website. Your visitors will run away :)
Secondly, even if you make that burger picture the size of a stamp, it is still 3600 KB!!!!!!!!!!!
It should be 10-15KB. No wonder it takes ages for your page to appear in the browser.

    moshu,

Okay, I didn't think of it until now. I believe there was an option to select how many posts you want to appear on each page. I will change that now to make each page shorter.

You think the JPGs are slowing things up that badly?

But why do you think the page is out of alignment? Maybe it's because the page is so long? Well, I'll know in a few minutes after I shorten the pages.

    Thanks.

P.S. The Yankees just won 14-13. Unbelievable game.

    1. While it is that long I never look at the code. Sorry.
    2. Such a huge image would slow down even a Formula-1 car :)
    3. What game? Who are the Yankees?

Okay, there seems to be something intrinsically wrong. I just changed the Reading Options to show at most 1 post per page. Yet, it still shows the default 10 posts per page.

Is there a trick to making the options work?

I'll take out some of the pictures. It's better if the pages load quickly.

Oh, the Yankees were losing 9-0 and 10-1 and came back to take the lead, then fell behind 13-12 in the top of the 9th. But in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, Posada hit a game-winning 2-run homer and they won 14-13.

I don't know if you follow baseball, but there are very few games like this. ;)

Here's the latest update. I was having the template problems with the default template. (I just changed the header.) I also downloaded and tried some other templates and had the same problem.

Now, I just tried the Classic template and it seems all the problems are solved. I wonder why the default template was giving me so many problems.
