Can someone explain to a newbie how to change the permissions to make the template writable? This is what wordpress tells me

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

but frankly it is gobbledegook to me.

I've done that to themes.php and theme-editor.php and I still get a message below the html editor saying "You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information."

    Any ideas?

You should change permissions to the Theme FOLDER (directory), not the themes.php file or theme-editor.php.
