   I like wordpress but I'll love it after I figure out how to make it more like a CMS like this page:

   see how he has it setup like a cms system with thumbnail and title. then you click the image to view the article.

   is this a plugin or a major hack?

   Easily a plug-in. There could be some custom work, or just nicely combined Ultimate Tag Warrior and Post Teaser plug-ins.
