how do you change the websites domain name without updating all image paths?

    when embedding images using either HTML or Visual editor, wordpress uses absolute URLs’: a fully qualified domain name.

    But if you want to change the domain name all the images will be broken because the path is now incorrect. How is this handled in wordpress?
