I thought they would work by putting 301 redirects in htaccess file but i don't see them in the htaccess file. So how do they work?

I see. Are those stored in the database then? And if so, which tables? Thanks!

So where is the old Joomla slug stored? For example, if I visit a slug that used to work on Joomla, it redirects to the new WP page. Where is that old Joomla slug stored? How does WP know which Joomla slug corresponds with new WP page?

The Joomla ID is stored in the postmeta table.
