Support » Fixing WordPress » How do I upgrade to 1.2.2 from 1.2.1?

  • I have a WordPress blog running 1.2.1 and I downloaded the 1.2.2 install package and I don’t know what files I need to upload to make the upgrade. I want to save all of my current content that is in my blog. Can someone tell me what files to upload to my blog wordpress directory? Thanks.

Just delete those files in your current installation, replace them with the ones from the new v1.2.2 download, and run /wp-admin/upgrade.php . If you made any previous changes to the fore-mentioned files, make sure that you know how to re-apply the changes after upgrading.

(Weblog content (i.e. posts, comments, links, etc.) is stored in the database, hence it can’t be touched just by uploading the new files.)
Consider those files you modified when you set up and customized your blog: index.php, wp-layout.css and wp-comments.php are ones most have made at least a few changes to, but are there any others you’ve edited, such as alterations you could have made to the /wp-admin or wp-include files? These are what you need to concern yourself about. But as we don’t know what you’ve edited, we can’t provide a list of what not to touch.
It’s always a good idea to keep a backup of all your WP files, so that if you update a file but find it included a modifcation you need, you can easily add it back.

The correct and current generic upgrade instructions are on the Codex:
