    Hello All,
i have a very big problem with my wordpress multisite. first of all it has been hacked and i find it difficult tracing which files to edit to make the necessary changes. My main homepage has been affected, links to other websites, created and i find nothing in my index.php. Secondly, i want to upgrade the site but the issue is the site was some how tweaked during the building process. can someone please help me with how best i can upgrade the multisite from 3.0.1 to 3.7.1 and also with the hacked issues. Thank you very much and hoping to hear from you.

When you log in, doesn't wordpress say "there is an update available?"

If not, you can do it manually.

But this can be tricky, BE SURE TO BACK EVERYTHING UP FIRST. And while you are upgrading there will be a short time when the site is not live, so do it when you have little traffic.

That will only take care of the hacks in WordPress core files, if there is any malicious code. I recommend a security plugin to help clean up your site after a hack.

Wordfence will check your plugins against the repository to make sure the code is clean. It has a lot of other great features. This is the one I recommend.

Bullet Proof Security, All In One WP Security & Firewall, and Better WP Security are all great ways to go as well.

Let us know how it goes.

  3. DO NOT USE THE AUTO UPGRADER IF YOU WERE HACKED

    Just don't.

    1) Backup
    2) DELETE all the core WP files, all your plugins and themes (you have a backup, so this is okay)
    3) Change passwords. Email, FTP, SQL.
    4) Upload MANUALLY fia FTP the core WP files. Ditto theme and plugins. I would reinstall 3.0 to be honest.
    5) NOW upgrade.

Thanks for the info. Why not use auto upgrade?

Thanks for the info. but do i get the core wp files of the 3.7.1 version and put them into my old installation. Wldnt it affect the multisite installation because some codes were added to the .htaccess file and the wp_config.php file while creating the multisite and also in the current multisite installatiions there are no blogs.dir folder. This folder keeps the individual images site users have on their individual sites. Can i also change the superadmin name because i used "admin" as the username and it is very easy guessing.
Thank you very much. Hoping to hear from you soon.

  6. I strongly suggest people not use the auto-upgrade because it's possible for the hacker to have changed where WP is going to download from :/

Really. If you can't do it, hire someone (Sucuri does good work)
