• Hello,

I’m new to using WordPress and FileZilla. I have a free wordpress.com blog and I recently downloaded and installed FileZilla. I’m trying to set up FileZilla so that I can edit the theme for my blog. I don’t know where to start. I see “Host”, “Username”, “Password” and “Port”. And I googled this topic, but couldn’t find a helpful reference. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • If your site is on wordpress.com — you’re in the wrong place :). See here:

Do you have your own host that you used to install wordpress or did you register through the wordpress.com site?

Am I in the wrong place?

    I don’t have a host. And I didn’t install wordpress. I just registered through the wordpress.com website.

Then yes, you are in the wrong place — click on the link I posted above — it will explain and take you to the right place.

I forgot to mention that I read the link. So, if I understand correctly, I cannot edit my wordpress.com using FileZilla, but if I used wordpress.org I could?

Correct. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different things.

.com is under the wordpress domain/hosting.

.org is simply a download and you run the “software” on your own domain/hosting through someone like Bluehost. This away you access “your” files via ftp.

You might be able to edit theme code under the ‘Appearance’ tab… should say ‘edit’. I’m not 100% sure though as I haven’t looked at the .com version in a long time.

Correct. WP.COM sites have fewer options and flexibility in what you can do and change. But WP.ORG sites are more work to maintain, fix, can have more problems, etc. So it’s a tradeoff…

You CAN edit and do things with your site on WP.COM through the browser interface — just not by FTP.

I wouldn’t say .org has more problems and requires more… it is the same cms running in both. lol. Just more flexibility and customization often meaning more plugins – which may cause problems. This is however not [directly] caused by wordpress.

I understand. Thanks for explaining that. Now I have to consider whether I should stick with WP.COM or transfer my site to WP.ORG. I will reread that link.

I have some pretty problem with setting my Filezilla account.

After successfully installing word-press account into my blog, yet I cant access my site.

I edited WP-configuration file before uploading the files, Can anyone out there assist me on how what is wrong, like file setting Generic proxy file list in my advance tab?
