   I recently created a blog where I post a song of the day from music I purchased on CD. I'm posting the mp3's in the 'audio-player' plugin, which is great, but it's still possible for users to rip the mp3 from the site and I need to make sure the music is protected before continuing to post new stuff. Is there an easy way to go about this? I did some research on Flash Media Server (audio-player works with Flash) but the price on that is sky high and probably a little bit more than what I need.

   Any other suggestions on how to protect these mp3's? I'm guessing there may be a 3rd party hosting service out there with DRM protection but can't seem to find any.

   yah good luck with that.

   You are NOT going to locate a wordpress plugin that provides the necessary DRM protection to satisfy the PERFORM Act.

   Purchased or not it gives no rights to distribute, and I'm wondering
   who you are trying to protect.
   I've spent all my life working in the entertainment industry, and I know whos side I'm on.

   Thanks for the reply Mike. I've spent all of MY life in the entertainment industry as well, and much of it in music. For the record, I'm trying to protect the artists whose music I'm posting so that users can't rip the mp3's for free. I think that's fairly obvious.

   Short answer: It can't be done, DRM doesn't work. If I can hear the song coming through my computer, then I can *always* make a perfect digital rip of it. Period.

   Long answer: There is no good way to attach DRM to MP3 files. If you use some other format for your music, then there may be DRM capabilities there, but MP3's don't do DRM.

   Don't put anything on the internet that you don't want somebody to be able to make a copy of. Ever. Because they can. Always. You can't stop them.

   meh, not true. you can always make a lossy digital rip of it -- which is all that matters anyway, that it can be ripped, that is.

   No matter what, the main issue is what mikey1 posted:

   Posting anything on your site/blog = distributing.

   hi again, and yes I agree with Otto, if you put it on the internet it will be copied, there is simply no way to stop it, even the major recording companies are currently tied up in knots.
   I tried for years to protect photos, never found a way.
   I'm not trying to be overly harsh,but,

   For the record, I'm trying to protect the artists whose music I'm posting

   I think musicians unions worldwide may have the last word.
   Anyway I'm off to listen to my new selection of Pink Martini CD's

    Have you considered posting just part of the track? Perhaps the fist minute or two. This allows people to hear what you are talking about in your blog (if that's what you are doing), but not rip off the musician, and might meet the requirements for fair use (though the RIAA would disagree as they seem to want to charge me each and every time I listen to a track from music I have purchased).
