• I created a .xml file using wordpress; export tool in the admins area. When I imported the .xml file using the import feature, some of the posts, content, and coments are missing from that .xml. Also, I did a manual full download of my wordpress. Since content is missing from the .xml file, I would like to try to retrieve the missing content from the full backup. If I have to rebuild my post by copying and pasting the content, this will be fine; I just want to locate where the content is stored, i.e, what directory would I find the post and comments, etc?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Posts and comments are stored in the database which you can access through PHPMyAdmin. Or simply look for the missing posts in the backup you made of said database.

What if I do not have a backed up file using myphpadmin which creates the .sql file or the wp export feature which creates the .xml file, where would I find the content in the wp directory folders that is located in my hosting account?

Every post, page, comment and setting is stored in the database. They aren’t actual files you can see. If you don’t have access to PHPMyAdmin and can’t create a new XML, I would suggest that you contact your host to see if they can get you a backup of the database.

The hosting company replied that they do not keep backups over 7 days old. Since I copied the whole wp files, starting with the wp root directory and all subdirectories, to my computer, is it possible that a new wp install can be setup and then copy the wp-content folder to the new installation?

….. additionally, I do not mean to sound redundant, if I do, but am just trying to understand if there is any other possible way for finding comments and posts other than using myphpadmin and a .xml file. Does anyone have any ohter ideas or suggestions other than .xml and myphpadmin?
