How do I edit the 'Meta' widget? (2 posts)

I have been running my blog for years and never allowed user registration so i've always hidden the meta widget. I am looking to begin letting users register so I can start an email list for blog updates and some announcements. Rather than using the default 'meta' widget with the site admin link and other things on it, i'd prefer just having a simple login or register widget. U/P fields + submit button for current users or 'Register' button for new users.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this?

Also, if possible, i'd like to install a plugin that would allow new users to be notified of new blog entries via email.

    Thanks in advance!

You can add a empty text-widget and manually add register and login links or use a plug-in:

    Better yet:
