How do I display a list of Most Viewed posts?

In descending order.
The biggest problem was how to get query_posts to work with a most viewed post parameter which doesn’t exist.

Is there any way to do this without a plugin?

If not, what is the best plugin for a nice simple unordered lists for the bottom footer for my site.
