How do I disable a category? (2 posts)

The site I'm working on has about 30 categories all with lots of data, but we only want to go live with 10. Is there any way to master-disable a category, or render it invisible on the site? We can't just exclude the category in the links as that wouldn't be enough. We have functions that pull from all the data, and the hidden category data would still show up. I have a feeling this will have to be a serious custom job, but I'm writing on the off chance there's some functionality built into WP that lets you do this.

you can exclude the ids of any category you don't want to have displayed in your menu of categories. Other than that, if you are asking how to not show those category posts, use a custom query to exclude posts of a particular category.
