How do I create a private Dev site to test plugins? (2 posts)

Last week I installed a new plugin that broke my site and luckily I had backups of the database and was able to restore the site that day.

I'd like to create a private sandbox site that is a mirror of the current live site so I can test plugins/changes. I want to avoid doing changes on my live site and risk visitors seeing errors.

    Hi djchriscruz,

Your best bet would be to install WordPress locally on your hard drive which would allow you to mirror your hosted site. This Codex article talks about ways of setting up a test environment: Test Driving WordPress, although the first option they provide won't allow you to test plugins since it is meant only for styling. Check out the other options because I think they could be suited for your needs.

    Good luck!

    Martin
