i’m feeling rather stupid because no matter what i do, i can’t change my blog’s url. i’ve followed the instructions in the codex but it didn’t work. every time i change it from /WordPress to anything else, i get 404 errors and the whole thing stops working.

my hosting providers were nice enough to let me install wordpress when databases weren’t included in my hosting plan and i already have a website set up so i don’t want the blog to become my primary page. i just want it to have a url that’s not /WordPress.

obviously i’m doing something wrong but i have no idea what.

    help?

  • If your wordpress file located inside the /wordpress/ directory, and you want your blog viewed as your home page, but you don’t want to move the wordpress files,

    1. You gotta change your URL (from http://domain.com/wordpress to just http://domain.com) from the Settings > General. Or I prefer to do it from the config.php. Refer to the codex.
    2. Then move the index.php and .htaccess to your www root.
    3. Then you’re done!

If you’re planning to move all your wordpress files to the root instead, just move all the files inside the directory to the www root. Before that, set all the wordpress URLs to only your domain, from your wp-admin or config.php.

    You’re all done!

thanks for the reply r3ck0rd but that’s not what i want to do. i want to retain my website as it is and have the blog as its own separate entity. i want to change the url from /WordPress to /littlewords (which is the name of my blog). every time i try it, even after carefully following the instructions in wordpress’ codex, it fails and the whole thing stops.

I think you mean you want the FOLDER to be named littlewords?

So after you upload the wordpress folder, you have to rename it on the server.

    http://www.yourdomain.com/wordpress/ will now read

    http://www.yourdomain.com/littlewords/

And of course you will install by hitting:

    http://www.yourdomain.com/littlewords/wp-admin/install.php

This is best done right after you install and before you switch to your theme and start tweaking.

Oh I see what you mean now…

If you haven’t installed it, do what webmistressofthedark said. If you have installed it, modify the url and change the directory.
