How do I back up my database?

    I need to update my WP 3.3.1 to 3.9.1. However, I am concerned that the website will disappear. It has already done so. The admin section still remains in 3.3.1. I am unable to make changes to the site. Most important, I need step by step instruction on backing up the site data base. Thanks, RM
