In order to do that you’d need to add more available spaces, which would require re-opening bookings.

I do understand that, but I want to it without increasing the number of spaces. So probably, after the text “This event is fully booked” there will be an option to book for waiting list.
So the user will be aware from start that he/she want to be on the waiting list.
Rather than having more spaces and user seeing pending without knowing whether the event is fully book, or on the waiting list?
So in a way, I want to make the user aware that, the event is fully booked, but you can still book for waiting list.
That’s clear but it’s not something that could be done without (quite a lot) of custom coding.
