How do I "activate" a plug-in on a non WordPress hosted website? (10 posts)

I have downloaded and uploaded Akismet to the appropriate directory in my non-Wordpress hosted website. The readme file tells me that the next step is to "activate it" and input my API. Here's what it says for the total of the instructions:

Upload the Akismet plugin to your blog, Activate it, then enter your [WordPress.com API key](http://wordpress.com/api-keys/).

How does one follow this instruction?

when you login to your wordpress.com profile, you can get your wordpress api on the main page.

Thank you but I wasn't complete. I have my api key.

It's the "activate" and "enter" steps that are confusing me. If I had a place to enter the api key I could do that; I'm just not seeing how to get to that stage.

  4. Activate the Askimet Plugin, then look to the left sidebar to Plugins>>Askimet Configurations for the place to enter your API key.

    >Activate the Askimet Plugin

The question is: How do I "activate the Askimet plugin?"

  6. Go to Dashboard >> Plugins. Click "Activate" on Askimet.

Songdogtech. Thank you for trying to help, but I think you're assuming incorrect facts. As I said in my first post, "this is a non WordPress hosted site."

This is a NON WP php site that uses cPanel. There is no dashboard. There is no sidebar. There is no "activate" key. There is no "configuration" option. Yet, the specific instruction I have quoted is WordPress's instruction for installing the Askimet plugin to a "NON WORDPRESS site."

So how does one activate a plugin on a non-wordpress site?

  8. this is a non WordPress hosted site

Around these forums and in the WordPress world in general, "non-Wordpress hosted site" means not hosted on wordpress.com, but wordpress selfhosted somewhere else, i.e. by a individual in these forums.

You were syntactically incorrect at the begining - and are still making a very incorrect assumption - that you can use a WordPress plugin on a non-wordpress site.

So how does one activate a plugin on a non-wordpress site?

    It will never work.

Thank you. It seems strange to me that the rest of the WP created site works flawlessly, but this one plugin concept seems not to be compatible. Is it that all parts of WP work on non-WP hosted sites, just not plugins?
