When users log in they are forced to log in again after 10 minutes. How can I extend the time?

Posted 2 years ago #This article may appear dated on the surface, but (the changes) appear to be effective from WordPress 2.5 on up. It reads as though the default expiration for registered users should actually be 2 weeks.
There is also some information and links to documentation on how and were the user cookie behavior is defined in WordPress, but I am at a loss as to suggest what might be causing the 10 minute limit. I don't know beans about php, but could there be any other script (plugin?) or php setting that is forcing the session timeout at 10 minutes?
