A site that I built for a client was suspended for malicious scripts due to not up-dating to 3.0.1. Is there a way I can get email notification of updates to remind my client to up-date?

The best way would be to subscribe to the development blog's feed:
http://wordpress.org/news/feed/
You can add this feed to a service like Feedblitz if you want direct emails.

There's debate going on about including such a thing in core, to which both sides have merit. But meanwhile, there is a plugin here
