"If this file were writable you could edit it."
That sentence appears at the bottom of my theme editor window. What does it mean, and what do I have to do to make it editable?

It means you have to change permissions on the file thru your web host. Is this a new theme you uploaded?
It's the same for both the default themes as well as the ones I downloaded from the theme browser.
If you don't mind me asking, how do I change permissions thru my web host?
Usually through the file manager in the cpanel. FI not, how did you upload the new themes? With an FTP program? You should be able to change permissions through that.
Some hosts I've seen just set the permissions like that as default and you have to change them every single time you upload a new theme.
For more detailed instruction, try the codex entry on Changing File Permissions. That will likely explain what you're missing. :)
Thanks! I shall mark this as resolved.
Andrea - I do upload themes via ftp - didn't know there was any other way.
