I believe the most popular software to create themes easily is artisteer. It’s not free, but you can download a demo to try it out.

I’m borrowing this because it’s the title I’d have used for my own question and anyone else looking later might find their answer from the original post.
I know XHTML and I know CSS but I have no idea where to go to start creating my own theme so that it matches my existing website. I know nothing at all about PHP and one of the reasons I chose WordPress is that it said you only need to know XHTML and CSS. What am I missing here?
Kyrna, you aren’t missing anything. To create your own theme you don’t need to know much about PHP at all, it’s just a matter of copy and paste, unless you want custom or complicated functions for your theme.
For example, if you want the content of a post, you just paste <?php the_content(); ?>, for the tittle, you use <?php the_tittle(); ?>, and so on. I’d recommend using an existing theme to see what you need, and browsing the codex, it’s not difficult at all, especially if you know XHTML and CSS.
If you want, you could do the HTML layout and I’ll give you a hand with the PHP bit.

Our site was designed by a professional designer, then I integrated it into a custom theme. The complete [link moderated] I created afterward is a step-by-step tutorial for doing it yourself.
