    When I hover the mouse over a user with a gravatar account, I get this in the JS console:

    Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)
    en.gravatar.com/d209b00c2b1c432b58cabd0d8c35c7cd.json?callback=Gravatar.fetch_profile_callback

    I'm running WordPress 3.0.5 in a multisite.

    I get the same thing....
    I'm on a self-hosted wordpress install via Dreamhost
    using WordPress 3.2.1
    and the default theme "Twenty Eleven 1.2"
    no modifications, etc...

    I found that you get a 404 on a particular email hash if that email address is not a primary email address. If you switch that email to be primary, it then finds it (no 404). This is actually the intended behavior according to the Gravatar FAQ. IMO, that restriction is ridiculous.
