I sincerely hope I am posting this in the right section as I am most definitely a website/coding/wordpress.org newbie in the sense that I am building a website through wordpress.org from scratch for the very first time!!

I am technically rebuilding a website for my employer (starting over in hopes to make it more user friendly and streamline the continuity and content for the new website). I am hosting the "dummy site" (no actual usable link to share, can only view it on my laptop) on my Macbook Pro using MAMP. I've gotten as far as creating the skeleton website, updating all of the content, creating the menus and drop menus, any media and links etc and am now at a point where I should be making it "look pretty".

My question that I'm struggling to figure out is that although I am hosting the "dummy site" on my Macbook I obviously haven't paid for any upgrades for themes/customizing the site itself aesthetically, so would I have to customize the website once I've exported it to my employers wp-login account and go from there and deal with a temporary disruption for viewers? Or is there a way around it that I can continue with via CSS and coding etc so when it does come time to put the new website up it's completely finished without any disruptions?

I hope this makes sense! Anybody that could point me in the right direction would be GREATLY appreciated! Again I apologize if I've posted this in the wrong section! Feeling like such a newbie! Thanks again!!

    Understood.

...I obviously haven't paid for any upgrades for themes/customizing the site itself aesthetically

WordPress dot org's all thing(s) is/are fully free, if you are using any Paid Theme (and modifying), then you have to pay them (depending on their set License outside the scope of GNU GPL 2.0).

so would I have to customize the website once I've exported it to my employers wp-login account and go from there and deal with a temporary disruption for viewers?

Depends on many factors like what is doing, who is doing, how is doing etc.

is there a way around it that I can continue with via CSS and coding etc so when it does come time to put the new website up it's completely finished without any disruptions?

If you do not have any content (post, pages etc on MBP), then only copy-pasting / adding the respected CSS of the same theme plus uploading the theme's extra modified js, images (if any) will work.

For example, you created a Child Theme of default Twenty Fourteen Theme, added or modified CSS; then only moving the directory of this Child Theme of default Twenty Fourteen Theme will work.

Second example, you have modified the default Twenty Fourteen Theme on MBP (not recommended as modifications might go away with official update), copy pasting the modified CSS via FTP Text Editor or WordPress Admin will work.

If you have any content (post, pages etc) and you need to move/port them too :

Please look at Moving WordPress. Take that you are changing the domain name (see here too). Your is localhost now.

Disruption will happen in these cases, it will be a false promise to say "there will be no disruption", but for it is for few minutes in a good hand.
