Support » Installing WordPress » Hosting one place, displaying on domain??

  • Hi all. I’m hoping you can help me with getting WordPress running again. I’m so confused with my situation I don’t know where to start, but I’ll try my best to explain. If you need more info just say and I’ll try my best.

Okay. My website is hosted on a free host (http://zymic.com specifically)
This free host provides you with a subdomain ie: yoursite.zzl.org. I had installed WordPress in the directory mysite.zzl.org/blog and configured WordPress to run on the homepage (mysite.zzl.org) through the Settings page (see http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory).

Okay, so WordPress was running fine, no problems. Then I decide I don’t want to use my subdomain anymore, and purchase a domain, because Zymic allows you to use a third party domain while still using THEIR hosting.

So on my domain, I change my nameservers to Zymic’s, put in my custom domain on the account settings page on my Zymic control panel. But I can’t for the life of me figure out how this affects Worpdress. Currently WordPress won’t show up on my new domain’s homepage. Would I say that, on the settings page of WordPress, that WordPress still runs on mysite.zzl.org/blog but shows up now on mysite.com??

I can’t figure it out, LOL. Bear with me.. I wouldn’t expect anyone to want to take on this (maybe stupid) question but any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

  • Did you change your
    WordPress address (URL)
    and
    Blog address (URL)
in the WP dashboard before moving ?

if not you may have to change it in the mySQL DB or it could be your DNS still waiting to update.

I’ve just moved 2 domains and on both occasions (even after changing settings in dashboard) still had to go into the mySQL DB (wp_options) and change the URL.

EyePhoto: Thanks for your reply. I did change these two things, and just double checked my database and the changes “stuck”. It still does not show up. Maybe I haven’t changed the wordpress address and blog address to the right thing.

If my old site’s WordPress address was http://www.oldsite.com/blog and Blog Address was http://www.oldsite.com

would I just change these two addresses to http://www.newsite.com/blog and http://www.newssite.com, respectively?

    Thanks!

Yes and make sure your old sub domain isn’t interfering also recheck your ‘index.php’ file so that it’s pointing to the right url as pointed out in the codex for ‘Giving WordPress Its Own Directory’.

You cannot use “redirected” or “pointed” locations in those two URL values in the admin panel.

The way you are trying to set it up – most likely will never work.

@eyephoto I just checked and I can’t see anything in the index that would interfere, yet it STILL doesn’t work. I have a feeling I’m missing something…

@moshu: Yeah, I definitely know I’m doing something[s] wrong. The problem is I don’t know what that is. I would appreciate, if you didn’t mind and of course knew, suggestions on what I could do. It’s probably impossible though, not knowing much about my situation. I just don’t know anything about this, so I don’t know where to start =/

Whereabouts is the actual WP install located? (at what level, root or still root/blog)

    (@enicole46)

all my wordpress files are located in root/blog

    Thanks =)

Have a domain? Install WP on it. Problem solved.

WP doesn’t work well with that kind of redirected, pointed domains.

Lol, it’s not quite so simple in my case. But I will play around with a few things. Thanks to both of you.
