I am the webmaster for a US Army website. I would like to use WordPress to develop a new website. What do I need to host on my computer and what do I need installed on the server that houses my webpages? In short, what do I need to install and where do I need to install it to host WordPress for my website?

Unless you plan on developing themes or plugins, you do not need anything on your computer. All content publishing in WordPress takes place via your web browser. You can find find details of the server requirements you will need here.

@esmi I am not sure whether you are aware of this fact that MOST developers first install things locally to DEVELOP it. Hence the concept of WAMP and MAMP was invented ! Also I had posted the same requirement page :)

Given that I've been a professional developer for 13 years - yes, I was aware of this thanks. However, WordPress stores all content in the database- not in files. which makes local development far more difficult (with the exception of plugins & themes) when it is time to move the local site to the remote server. If this is still something you wish to undertake, then please see installing WordPress locally and Moving_WordPress.

My question perhaps needs to be reworded. I own and operate my server. I can install anything I want to to my web server, I know I need to install WordPress to my web server but do I need to install the database (whichever one I choose) to the server also. All the answers that I have recieved have indicated that I need to install WordPress to my server but MUST I install the database to the server?

I have already installed WordPress and WAMP locally but do not want to move this to my server as I am using it to become familiar with the program.

@webstudd: It is impolite to interrupt another poster's ongoing thread with a question of your own. Please stick to your own topic: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/one-click-publish?replies=3.

Is the server already running mySQL? If so, then you need to create a new (empty) database and a user who has full access privileges for that database.

@USAG the WordPress installer will populate the database. But you need to have the MySQL software on your server.

@esmi, I had replied before your post. For some reason its missing.
